She remembered that night quite vividly. No matter how hard she repressed the memory, it always resurfaced.

She remembered being in the passenger seat as they rode in silence. Wayne handled the truck clumsily, cutting down side rodes, headed away from the diner, in which her mother worked at rather than toward it.

“Where are we going?” her voice had cut through the silence. Kate jerked her finger in the opposite direction. “The diner’s that way.”

“I’ve got something to show you,” Wayne’s lips curved into a smirk.

Kate sat back in her seat and frowned.

“You know your daddy loves you, right?” he said once they had stopped at a secluded section off the main road.

“Yes,” she had murmured uncomfortably, while his hand sifted through her hair.

“You’re so beautiful,” he’d whisper.

“Come here.”

She hesitated, not really sure what he’s getting at. When she didn’t immediately do as he said, he had pulled her over onto his lap, her back flushed up against his chest. She stiffened because of the close proximity and he had told her to relax.

He’d told her that it wouldn’t hurt if she’d just stay still.

“Relax,” he had murmured against her ear. “You’re going to like this, I promise.”

She remembered the distinct sound of clothes shuffling. How his hand clutched onto the hem of her yellow sundress, which her mother had given her for her 13th birthday. He had pulled the hem of it up to her exposed thighs and hips.

She remembered the harsh sound of a zipper being pulled down and his hand between her legs as he shifted her panties to the side.

Once he’s inside, she remembered feeling sick, and trapped. She couldn’t breathe, she had curled her hands into a small fist, she whimpered. He had muttered something she couldn’t make out as he dropped his hands to her thighs and squeezed them.

She’d squirmed, but instead of letting her go, he used his grip to draw her more tightly against him.

She squeezed her eyes shut and bit her lip. The tears already seeped through her closed lids. A scream welled somewhere inside her, in the place that knew all her secrets. She had held as still as she could, eyes pinched shut; she prayed that it would be over soon. But still, the darkness had pressed in on her.

She remembered his labored breathing. He panted like an animal. Her stomach churned; she dug her finger nails into her palms, clutched them for dear life, certain they were the only thing that would keep her anchored to this world, to her sanity.

She wanted her mama.

With a grunt of exertion had finished, shoved her over to her seat and zipped his pants back up.

Kate had slumped against the door, eyes vacant as she stared off into the distance.

She remembered the familiar click of his lighter and it had broken her out of her dazed state.

He had glanced over at her and told her gruffly that she’d better keep that mouth of hers shut. She had demurely placed her hands in her lap and stared forward.

She remembered nothing being said as they had pulled into a parking space in front of the diner, nothing at all and it frightened her. She had slowly brought one leg over to the other and stumbled out of the truck to her mother who might or might not notice the sudden paleness in her cheeks, the bit lip and shell shocked disposition.

She remembered approaching her mother, being both horrified and relieved to be in her arms.

She remembered her mother had a slice of pie and ice cream already waiting for her.

She had sat at a booth, while Wayne and her mother shared a lingering kiss at the door. As he left Diane waved goodbye. Kate had looked away from this scene and focused intently on the plate in front of her.

She remembered her mother sitting across from her, smiling brightly. She liked seeing her mother smile. But that smile had faded.

“Honey, is everything okay?”

Kate had looked up at her mother, feigned innocence, and stared wide eyed at her. She had forced herself to smile and nodded her head. She clutched tightly to the spoon full of ice cream as she brought it to her mouth.

She remembered her mothers smile, the feeling of her hand as it ruffled her hair before she stood up and returned back to work in the kitchen. Completely oblivious.
