He watched them all as they slept, the darkness enveloping the Island in its warm embrace. Embers from the fires still glowed faintly, but there wasn't enough light for anybody to see him if they happened to wake up.
None of them knew. None of them possibly could. He kept it well hidden, never telling them more about his past than he had to. He helped out where he could, guiding the others when they didn't know which way to go, lent his talents whenever they were needed. But none of them suspected anything deeper.
His gaze moved out to the jungle as his mind drifted back.

The desert was cool at night, a breeze moving along the sand with a quiet whispering that surrounded him. He wasn't sure what had awoken him, but he knew that there was something out there. Slowly, he untangled himself from his blankets and moved out from the cover of his tent.
Moonlight shone down, illuminating the expanse around him. He looked around, spotting the sentries in their places. Peering closer, he saw that there was something wrong with the way they were standing. He walked over to Rahsheesh, gently placing a hand on the man's shoulder.
His friend didn't move. Frowning, he moved to stand in front of him, shocked at what he saw. Rahsheesh's eyes were wide open, but he could tell that they were unseeing as they stared out over the desert. He shook him, did everything he could to wake him out of whatever trance he had fallen into. But Rahsheesh remained as still as stone.
As he looked around him, he saw that it was the same with the other three guards who were posted around the camp. Worry rising in his chest, he turned to go wake his commander.
"Sayid."
The whisper was low and hoarse, and it made him spin around to see who was there. But there was no one to see – just the moonlight and the sand, moving in waves around him. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, trying to reassure himself that it was just the wind moving across the sand that he had heard. He turned again toward the camp.
"Sayid."
This time he turned to see black smoke roiling over the desert. He looked around to see if anybody else was witnessing this, but it was as though the camp had been turned to stone. There was no movement, no sound. Cautiously, he took a few steps, toward the outer edges of the camp.
The smoke seemed to beckon to him, drawing him farther and farther away from his troop. But now he found that he couldn't stop, couldn't turn around. His feet moved on without any direction from his brain, seemingly independent.
He followed the blackness across the sand, awe and curiosity overwhelming his fear and doubt. The smoke led him over a rise and back down the other side, seeming to gather at the bottom. As he neared, the voice came back, but now it seemed to be joined by an entire chorus. The whispers shifted around him, surrounding him and drowning out everything else in his mind.
The smoke was so close now that he could reach out and touch it. His eyes narrowed as he saw a small pinpoint of light appear in the center of the darkness. Slowly, it grew, expanding outward and filling his entire view. A sudden flash, and it enveloped him.

"Sayid."
He smiled faintly. None of them knew. But they would soon enough.
Turning, he moved into the heart of the jungle.
