Title: Protection
Rating: PG
Pairing: Shannon/Boone
Disclaimer: I wish I owned everything. If I did Sawyer would be mine. All mine.
Summary: After Claire is attacked, Boone protects Shannon while she sleeps.
Boone felt his eyelids grow heavy, and tried hard to keep them open. He wouldn’t sleep as long as there was some maniac running around the island attacking girls. He was keeping strict watch over Shannon, making sure that if anyone came near her, he’d be there to protect her.
He also wanted to be there to comfort her when she woke up. She already had twice that night, and he’d stroked her hair and kissed her shoulder and told her that everything was okay. Shannon tried to shake it off like it was no big deal. But Boone knew her, he knew how frightened she really was. He could hear the slight panic in her voice when Hurley had told them that Claire was attacked, the edge of fear hidden beneath the bitchiness when she proclaimed that she wasn’t moving to the ‘rape caves’. It had taken him long enough to actually get her to fall asleep, stroking her arm and talking to her until she finally gave in and let her eyes close, only after making Boone promise that he’d stay with he all night.
He was also worried about her asthma. Shannon was prone to attacks when she was overly stressed or scared. He remembered back to when Shannon was ten, they had been watching one of those true ghost stories shows on television, and it had scared Shannon so badly she’d had an attack. Boone had felt guilty because he had pressured her into watching it. Ever since then it had been his noble mission to prevent Shannon from ever having an attack. He could hear her breathing now, slightly ragged, and he checked for what must have been the twentieth time that night to make sure the mixture Sun had made for Shannon’s asthma was next to him, just in case. He rubbed her back gently as her breaths became shorter and shallower, and he wondered if she was even asleep.
“Shan?” Boone whispered. When she didn’t answer, he moved closer to her ear and whispered again. “Shan?”
“Hmm?” Shannon mumbled between breaths.
“You can go to sleep. It’s okay, I’m here.” He leaned in and kissed her cheek and was surprised to find that it was wet. “Hey, come on,” Boone said, and Shannon let out a quiet sob. “It’s okay. I’m right here. I’m not going to let anyone hurt you.”
“I know,” Shannon said.
Boone wrapped an arm around her and put his ear to her back, listening to her breathing. “Calm down, Shan. It’s okay.” He listened as her breathing slowed and became steady. He rubbed her stomach gently. “There you go. It’s okay.”
He moved away from her keeping his hand on her stomach. “Boone?” Shannon asked.
“Yeah, sweetheart?”
“Will you hold me?”
Boone was worried that if he laid down he’d fall asleep, but Shannon’s voice was desperate and pleading. He figured that if anyone tried to hurt her, he’d be able to tell. He stretched out next to her, wrapping his arms protectively around her and kissing her cheek.
“You okay now?” He asked. Shannon nodded. Boone buried his face in her neck. He waited for her breathing to become regular, then heavy, and then he let himself drift to sleep.
