Title: Be Seeing You

“Hey.”
Jack can’t say he’s surprised to see her. He knew she’d eventually find him. He wonders where she’s running to or from this time, if he was just on her way. He probably should be insulted if that was the truth, but since it was Kate – since he knew her – he wasn’t.
Ten minutes ago, he had stepped out of the hospital doors after a very long shift for the break that he was supposed to take three hours ago. He had pulled a new pack of cigarettes out of his back pocket only to find he had left his lighter in the car.
And when he’d gotten to his car, there had been a woman on the hood.
So there she sat, with a soft, angelic, innocent smile on her face. Experience had taught him to see past appearances.
He walks to the driver’s side door without acknowledging her, fumbling with the keys as he tries to unlock the door. He wants a cigarette now more than ever.
The car jostles a bit as the door opens and he notices that Kate has jumped off of the hood. He doesn’t say anything, instead reaching across the seat to the ashtray to pull out a cheap lighter he’d bought at a gas station.
“How’ve you been?” Again, she was going for the nonchalant approach. He closes the door and looks her over. She looks good.
“Fine.” He replies, walking past her and leaning against the front of the car. Kate takes a deep breath and stuffs her hands in her pockets. She leans next to him and sighs. He keeps his eyes on the pavement and occasionally his cigarette.
“I haven’t seen you since-”
“Yeah.” He doesn’t want to let her finish. He doesn’t want to be having this conversation. He’s always wondered why he ended up doing things for Kate that he didn’t particularly want to do.
A few minutes pass in silence, but neither of them leave. Jack just leans against his car and smokes his cigarette and Kate just leans against Jack’s car and watches him smoke his cigarette.
As if out of nowhere, her hand reaches out and her fingers brush against his. It takes all the energy in Jack’s body not to drop the cigarette right there. But he doesn’t have it in his hand for much longer. She takes it from him and places it between her lips. He feels like he’s been kicked (and hates that her touch can still do that to him) but he can’t stop watching her.
She hands his back to him and he takes it quickly. He expects her to look smug, like developing another bad habit would make Jack give her the time of day, like it would make him want to fix her.
“You started smoking.” He comments. He makes sure to make it sound like a mere observation. He doesn’t want her to see his curiosity.
She begins to look ashamed and he knows better then to think it’s because of the cigarettes.
“Yeah,” he responds, her hand suddenly in her hair. It’s a nervous habit of hers that he remembers well. “I just…picked it up.”
“Mm-hm.” Jack nods, throwing his cigarette on the ground and fishing in his pocket for another. He suddenly remembers that he’d gone through three packs of cigarettes the last time he’d seen Kate.
“Sawyer.” She says. She tries to get a good look at his face but this time he isn’t hiding hit. He looks…calm, collected, unsurprised.
“I saw you in a magazine last week.” He says, offhand. “It was open in the lounge.”
“It was just an interview.”
“I’m not judging you Kate.”
She sighs, because it’s all she can think to do.
“Why did you come here Kate?” he looks her square in they eyes for the first time. And she looks away.
“I…” And her hand is back in her hair. “I just wanted to see you. I want…” she sighs again. “You know what? I don’t know what I want.”
Jack has to laugh. “Yeah.” He says. “We’ve been saying that for a long time.”
She frowns. “We?” she doesn’t get it. “Who’s we?”
He holds up his cigarette. “Sawyer.” He says. The look of unadulterated shock on her face is almost worth the entire conversation.
“What-”
She’s cut off by the sound of Jack’s beeper. He checks it and discards his cigarette. “I have to go.” He tells her.
She nods. “Yeah. Okay.”
He smiles genuinely and says, “It was nice to see you Kate.”
She smiles back, even though she doesn’t feel much like smiling anymore. “Yeah, you too.” She replies. “I’ll see you around.”
He nods. “See you around.”
