Summary: “Nothing surprises Claire anymore.”
Rating: PG
Characters: C/C and Aaron
Nothing surprises Claire anymore. After everything that's happened - the polar bears and unseen monsters; Walt showing up after three days, looking as though he had aged three years; the hole in Sawyer's shoulder that never bled, but still isn't healed - she's fairly sure that she can take anything without blinking. Hell, if Thomas were to pop out of the hatch after all this time, she's fairly sure she'd kick his bits and then take a walk with Charlie, insisting nothing was out of the ordinary. She has come to expect that life on this island is anything but ordinary and that if she tries to rationalize every little thing, she'll just go to bed with a headache.
Headaches are bad. They ran out of aspirin months ago. Not that Jack would let her have some for a little headache.
It's better to just shrug and accept everything, to permanently alter your view of reality, because nothing will ever really change. Things will always be a little bit wonky on this island, Claire knows.
That's why she's not surprised in the slightest when Aaron's eyes change color. Jack says it isn't that surprising; almost all babies are born with blue eyes that change after a few months. Aaron's shouldn't have changed; Claire and Thomas both have bright blue eyes. It wasn't a gradual thing either. Claire remembers putting him down to sleep one night, those big blue eyes crinkled in delight as she and Charlie sang him to sleep. When he wakes up the next morning, Aaron's eyes aren't blue, but gray; a deep, steel gray, warm and open.
That day, Charlie is the only one who can keep Aaron quiet and happy.
Claire isn't surprised that Aaron has his father's eyes.
