Another Path - Prologue

“This is ridiculous,” Shannon shouted, her expression caught between embarrassment and fury. “I gave the report, why do I have to get pulled off the plane?”

“We have the strictest security policies regarding all flights to the US, Ma’am,” one of the guards informed her. “We have to hold all parties until the matter can be completely investigated.”

“This is such bullshit,” She grumbled. She thought about telling them it was all just a lie, but figured then she’d be the one in trouble and it just wasn’t worth getting arrested in Sydney.

“Shan?” Boone ran to where she stood in the middle of four security guards. “Are you okay? What’s going on?”

“They’re holding me for interrogation that’s what,” Shannon huffed. “Can’t you call Amnesty International or something?”

Boone rolled his eyes but gave her a look of genuine concern. “You want me to stay?”

Shannon sighed and thought for a moment. She and Boone probably could us a little time apart before getting back to LA. Things were still…awkward. “Nah you go on ahead, tell Sabrina I’ll be back as soon as possible. I’ll call you when I get a plane out.”

“Okay,” he agreed reluctantly and with one final look back at her, he headed once more towards the gate.

Shannon sighed and turned to one of the guards. “Well let’s get it over with,” she grumbled. The guards led her through the airport and into a separate set of rooms created specifically for these kinds of interviews.

For two hours she told and retold her story to whatever guard or airline personal wandered through the door to interrogate her. It wasn’t so bad; they were polite at least and gave her some bottled water and crackers from the vending machine when it reached the third hour.

The door to the room she was in had a small window and through it Shannon saw several people in suits shuffle into view before disappearing into the room next to hers. That guy must be in theother room, she thought to herself. What if he did have a bomb? Maybe they’d proclaim her a hero or something and Boone would have heart attack from shock and Sabrina would…well, probably still treat her like shit but there was no winning with some people.

In the other room Sayid was looking exasperatedly up at the CIA agent that stood in front of him, doing his best not to scream in frustration.

“I told you, I have no idea why they took me off the plane,” he said for what felt like the 80th time in the past three hours.

“Someone reported you leaving your bag unattended,” the agent replied, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.

“I went to buy a newspaper, I had too much stuff and I guess trusted the wrong person,” he groaned, running a hand through his hair. He remembered the girl on the benches. What had he been thinking trusting her? She had long legs, light skin, blonde hair and blue green eyes. Of course she’d turned him in.

“We’ll do our best to have them release you as soon as possible,” the agent sighed. “Tell them you were helping us, that should ease their—

The agent was cut off as the door to the room flung open. A man in a suit with the Oceanic emblem on the lapel looked around frantically at the Agents and Sayid.

“Something happened,” the man managed to say between gasps for breath. “The plane…we…we lost communication, it’s no where on the satellite systems…”

Sayid and the Agents all bolted out of the room. There was a TV in the area that connected all the tiny interview rooms together. Someone dressed in a flight attendants uniform turned the volume up.

“…I’ll repeat that again, we’re receiving news from Oceanic Airlines that flight 815 from Sydney to Los Angeles has gone off radar somewhere over the Pacific. Though officials have not confirmed, they do admit it is very likely the plane crashed…”

“The plane…crashed?” Sayid and the agent beside him turned in the direction of the new voice. Sayid’s eyes widened. It was the girl he had trusted with his bag, the one who reported him. They must have pulled her from the flight as well.

“It can’t have…but Boone was…” Shannon felt her knees give out underneath her but she was too stunned to make any effort to balance herself.

Though he still angry that she reported him, Sayid found his natural reaction when he saw her begin to fall was to rush to her side to steady her.

“Careful,” he admonished and helped her down slowly to sit against the wall. He knelt beside her, just to make sure she didn’t faint completely.

Shannon’s eyes filled with tears and she looked desperately at the man beside her, realizing somewhere in the back of her mind who he was. “My brother…he was on the plane. I told him to stay on the plane…”

“We don’t know anything yet, it could have landed somewhere,” he tried to sound soothing but wondered why he was lying, why he was going out of his way to comfort her. He looked at the girl who had seemed so defiant on the chairs hours before who sat nearly broken on the floor now. While reaching into his pocket to hand her a tissue it occurred to him that this girl, however inadvertently, had saved his life.

This looks to be an intriguing beginning, and I'll be excited to see where you go with it! There's not enough good Shannon/Sayid fic out there for my liking. Just a small typo that I noticed: "airline personal" should be "airline personnel." I hope it's okay that I pointed that out. Hope to see more of this soon!

Thank you for the recs! I've gotten to where I avoid ff.net like the plague; I still post my own fics there, but I rarely read stories over there. But I will definitely have to check those authors out.
