The cool water of the tiny waterfall and lake washed over Jack’s skin. He felt the dirt and grim of the past days washing off of him. He liked it out there. It was quiet and serene. He quickly dove to the bottom of the lake, his fingers skimming the soft sand. Suddenly, a dangling foot appeared in front of his face. He surfaced quickly.
“Well hey there, Doc. Midnight swim?” Sawyer drawled slowly, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Jack sighed and glanced at the dark stars.
“What do you want James?” Sawyer’s brow furrowed.
“What’s up? You never call me James unless something is wrong.” He asked, shifting on the rock to see Jack better.
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe because you are out here. I’m naked under here, Sawyer. This is sort of weird.” Jack shrugged. “How’d you know I was out here any way?”
“Seen you come out this way a few times. And about your insecurity issues, what does it matter? Ain’t nothin’ I never seen before.”
“I just.. ugh, fine. Whatever.” Sawyer grinned triumphantly as Jack rolled his eyes. The dim light from the torch Sawyer had stuck in the sandy shore cast shadows across Jack’s face. The ridged lines and creases that normally plagued his face were absent now. He was completely calm, Sawyer noticed. He felt his inhibitions and will power slipping away.
“You come out here often, Jack?” Sawyer asked, gazing upward at the sky.
“Often enough, I suppose.” Jack shrugged again, the muscles in his shoulders flexing. “It’s nice to here that, though, Sawyer.”
“Hear what?”
“You called me Jack. It’s nice to hear that you know my name.” He chuckled, moving from the water to get dressed. He quickly dried with his tee shirt and tugged on his jeans. He sat down on the rock next to Sawyer.
“Course I know your name, Doc. I know the whole damn thing. Middle name even.” Sawyer snorted as he laughed. “It’s nice our here. Peaceful, and quiet.”
“Yeah, I come out here to think. Well, that and to get away from that hell that has replaced my life.” Jack shook his head.
“Ya know, Doc, remember how I told you I talked to your dad in Sydney?” Jack nodded slowly. “Well, I’m proud of you too. You’ve doin’ a helluva job takin’ care of everyone.” Sawyer looked at his toes as he skimmed the top of the water with them.
“Thanks Sawyer.” Jack smiled. Sawyer nodded and hoisted himself off the rock. “Hey, where are you going?”
“I’m…uh…heading back in to camp.” Sawyer stammered, his heart pounding in his throat. He had almost told Jack what he felt about him. He could not let that happen.
“Oh, okay. I’ll see you in the morning?” Jack asked, his voice hopeful. “Ping pong tournament?”
“You got it Doc. Night.” Sawyer smiled shyly, blushing.
“Sleep well James.”
