~Prologue (100 words)~
He didn't understand how there could be a baby in Mommy's tummy, but he liked when Daddy lifted him up and put him in the bed with Mommy so he could lay his head on the big bump. Sometimes he could feel the baby move, and that made him giggle.
"You're going to be the big brother, sport," Daddy told him. "That means you have to look after your mama and the baby." Boone didn't understand that either, but he knew it was important, and it made him feel important.
"Me brother," he announced proudly and cuddled against Mommy's belly.
~Chapter 1~
He stared at his plate because he didn't dare look up at her. He hadn't even touched his food, except to move it around the plate a little, and he couldn't believe she sat there eating bite after bite like it was the last meal she was ever going to get.
"How was your day, sweetheart?" Daddy asked her, and his tone made Boone feel even more ill than he already felt.
He didn't have to look at her to know she shrugged. Shannon was always shrugging. Like it was some kind of trademark or something. Boone felt his jaw tighten, he took a deep breath and forced himself to relax and take a bite of his tofu. He wouldn't be doing anybody any good if he didn't eat what was on his plate.
"It was okay," Shannon answered innocently.
"Only okay?"
She shrugged again. Boone looked up and met her eyes. He didn't mean to, but it happened before he could stop himself. And once he made eye contact with her, he couldn't look away. Not until she did.
She shifted her eyes to look at Daddy. "Well, a funny thing happened at school. There's this boy in my class, Jimmy. He's always in trouble for something. He dropped his lunch tray and everybody laughed because spaghetti went everywhere, even on the top of his head."
"And you thought that was funny?"
Boone felt the hairs at the back of his neck stand on end. He didn't dare look up now. Didn't dare call attention to himself.
"Well, yeah. It was. Kind of."
He saw it coming, and knew there wasn't anything he could do but take it. Daddy's hand shot out, and thrust Boone's plate up at him. Tofu and rice and broccoli rained down on him, but he didn't move. He didn't dare move an inch, except to blink because he couldn't help that. He didn't even dare bring his hand up to brush the stray bits of food off his face or out of his hair.
"Is it funny now, Shannon?"
"No, Daddy."
"You shouldn't laugh at other people's misfortune, Shannon. It's very rude."
"Yes, Daddy. I'm sorry."
Boone closed his eyes, squeezed them shut. He expected the familiar smack of Daddy's hand, but it didn't come. And then he heard it, but didn't feel it. Shannon gasped.
"I will not tolerate rudeness, Shannon."
"I'm sorry, Daddy. I didn't…I didn't mean to." Her voice wavered. Boone knew she was crying, or was about to cry. He didn't dare look at her to find out which.
But he did reach for his glass of milk, deliberately knocking it over. He knew that would draw Daddy's attention away from Shannon.
He barely flinched at the hand snaking out to connect with his jaw.
