Hi! I'm not a very prolific writer, but I have a little something I hope some of y'all like. *hopeful smile*
Title: Late Afternoon Sun
Author:
elina
Pairing: Kate/Claire
Disclaimer: So not mine.
Author's Notes: Unbeta'd. Future-fic...set roughly five months from crash date; takes liberties with seasonal timeline. Snippet. Schmoopy. x-posted to my LJ.
Kate wiped the sweat off her brow with the back of her forearm, then ducked inside the flap of her tent. Claire was on the ground, lying next to Jamie on the mat of palm fronds that served as a floor.
She spent so much time weaving those mats. At least they had kept her busy during the last days of her pregnancy, and during the early terrifying days when it looked like Jamie wasn't going to make it.
"Hey, love," Claire smiled up at her. "Rough day keeping the peace?"
Kate smiled in return, kneeled down, and kissed her. "Oh, you know: same old, same old. People like to do as little work as they can get away with, even when they know we're going to have a tough winter if they don't get their asses in gear." She pressed her nose to Jamie's belly and inhaled newly-washed-baby scent. Claire ran her hand over Kate's shoulder.
"In case you haven't checked lately, we're on a tropical island. How tough can it get?" She tucked a strand of hair behind Kate's ear. "It's not like we're going to have freeze advisories."
Kate rolled her eyes. "That's what people keep saying, but it is going to get cooler, and the weather's going to get worse. We've got to get some structures up, something to protect us if it decides to hail or flood. Plus, it's going to be harder to get food..." She was distracted by Claire's fingertips, still soft somehow, stroking down her cheek and tracing her chin. She grinned. "Alright, I'll leave it outside."
"Good." Claire's smile was victory-full, and twinkly. "Because we've just laid down for a nap, and you look like you could use one, too."
With a laugh and a groan, Kate stripped off her shirt and shorts to lie on the cool leaves next to Claire. "Best plan I've heard all day." Within minutes they were asleep: the baby, the mother, and the sheriff.
